The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Works for Windows 95, version 4.0
  • Microsoft Works for Windows 95, version 4.0 4.0a

SYMPTOMS

If your database has at least two fields containing a default value and you filter a non-default field, the filter may work properly the first time but not subsequently. The default field may be incorporated into the filter criteria. If this field is added to the filter criteria it can make the filter longer than 255 characters resulting in the following error message:
The filter contains an error.

Review the filter and make changes if necessary, and then try again.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, do one of the following:

Delete the unnecessary filter criteria in either the Easy Filter or Filter Using Formula dialog box.

-or-

Use Apply Filter on the Records menu rather than Apply Filter in the Filter dialog box. The Apply Filter command on the Records menu does not produce the problem behavior.

The Filter Contains An Error message will appear if you have entered a very long default value in the field. Works allows up to 255 characters in a filter formula.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Works for Windows version 4.0 and 4.0a.
