SYMPTOMS

When you convert a Word for the Macintosh version 5.x document to or from Word for Windows or Word for the Macintosh, the page orientation may revert to the Portrait setting.

CAUSE

Word for the Macintosh versions 5.x and 6.0 use the Macintosh system print engine, which determines page orientation.

The Word document retains Page Orientation information in a Macintosh print record. If the print record is missing or if a different printer on a different Macintosh computer generated it, landscape orientation reverts to portrait. See the "More Information" section later in this article for examples.

WORKAROUND

To set the orientation for the page, click Page Setup on the Layout menu, and then click the Landscape or the Portrait icon.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Macintosh printer driver is currently active for
                                 both versions of Word, landscape
orientation is retained when you open the

Word 5.x for the Word 6.0 If you have different printer driver
Macintosh and later active for Word 5.x than you do for Word

                                 because different Macintosh printer
drivers may write print record information
in different ways, and the information on
orientation may or may not be available in
a form that Word can recognize.
