SYMPTOMS

When you run the tutorial for Works versions 2.0x or 3.0x, you receive general protection fault errors, or the system may hang when the wait dialog box is displayed. This may be caused by running QuickMenu in the background while running the Works tutorial. This utility comes with a program called WindowsMAKER Pro.

You may also receive either of the following error messages:
Application Error

Msworks caused a General Protection
Fault in module User.exe @ 0001:83FD

-or-

Clipsrv caused a General Protection
Fault in module User.exe @ 0001:83FD

RESOLUTION

In some instances, you can continue past the error in Windows 3.1x by pressing CTL+ALT+DEL. At the blue error screen, Press ENTER to return to Windows and move to the next lesson in the tutorial. If this does not correct the problem, you must remove the entry for the terminate-and-stay- resident (TSR) program in the Win.ini.

To remove the Win.ini entry, do the following:

  1. Close any running programs.
  2. Click the Start button, and then click Run. (For Windows 3.1x in Program Manager on the File menu, click Run)
  3. Type "Win.ini" (without the quotation marks) and press ENTER or click OK.
  4. Look for an entry such as:

    Load=C:\Winmaker\startwqm.exe

This entry starts the TSR program.
  5. Place a semi-colon (;) at the beginning of this line.
  6. On the File menu, click Save.
  7. On the File menu, click Exit.
  8. Restart Windows.
After restarting Windows, QuickMenu will not start automatically.

MORE INFORMATION

WindowsMAKER Professional, version 5.04, by Blue Sky Software is a programming tool (Prototyper & C/C++ Code Generator). It includes a TSR program named QuickMenu, version 4.01 that appears as a palm tree icon to the right of the Control menu of Windows 3.1x applications such as Program Manager, Works, or Paintbrush.

In Windows 95, the palm tree icon is not visible until you invoke the program by pressing its hot-key (CTL+SPACE BAR by default).

The Please Wait a Moment screen with a large hourglass that appears between lessons in the Works tutorial conflicts with QuickMenu.

The current version of WindowsMAKER Pro is version 6.0; QuickMenu is not included with this version. If during the Setup of version 6.0 you choose the Upgrade option, QuickMenu will be left on your computer if previously installed.
