The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 for Macintosh
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.0 for Macintosh

This article was previously published under Q152710

SYMPTOMS

When you run Internet Explorer for Macintosh, your desktop colors or fonts may change, or Internet Explorer may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Desktop file is damaged. A damaged Desktop file may be indicated by generic icons in the Finder and the inability to start programs.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, rebuild the Desktop file by clicking Restart on the Special menu in the Finder, and then pressing and holding down COMMAND+OPTION while the computer restarts. If rebuilding the Desktop file in this manner does not correct the problem, you may need to obtain a tool that forces the Macintosh to recreate the Desktop file series by deleting the files entirely. Tools that rebuild the Desktop file in this manner are available from various online sources.

MORE INFORMATION

Rebuilding the Desktop file by pressing and holding down COMMAND+OPTION while you restart the computer may purge inactive files and links, but leave the damaged set of files.
