TMGR: Mtpdef1.tpl File and Teammgr.exe Must Be in Same Folder (151971)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Team Manager

This article was previously published under Q151971

SUMMARY

When the Team Manager executable file, Teammgr.exe, is run, it must find a team file named Mtpdef1.tpl in the same folder; otherwise, it displays the following message:
Microsoft Team Manager is missing one of its components.

Please reinstall Team Manager.
Team Manager ends after you close the message.

NOTE: If the Mtpdef1.tpl file is in another folder, then specifying that folder as the working directory for a shortcut to Teammgr.exe does not work. In Windows 95, the working directory is specified in the shortcut Start in field.

MORE INFORMATION

The Mtpdef1.tpl file is a team file template that is installed as read only in the Team Manager folder. It is used any time a new, blank team file is created after you click "No, create a blank team file" in the New Team File window. Team Manager requires that the Mtpdef1.tpl file is in the Team Manager folder, even if you want to open an exiting team file, rather than to create a new one.

There is no way to specify that a template file with a different name be used at start up. However, Team Manager does allow a new team file to be based on an existing one at start up by selecting "Yes, from a previously saved team file" in the New Team File window. This feature is the preferred way of implementing templates in Team Manager.

However, there is an alternative approach. The Mtpdef1.tpl file can be renamed, moved, or deleted, and an existing team file can be moved to the Team Manager folder and renamed as Mtpdef1.tpl. Now when you click "No, create a blank team file," Team Manager creates a new team file that looks exactly like the team file that was renamed as Mtpdef1.tpl, including all of its formatting and option settings, and any tasks, people, and assignments it contained.
