SUMMARY

In FrontPage, you can take HyperText Markup Language (HTML) pages that exist on a server without FrontPage Server Extensions and convert them into a FrontPage Web. Because FrontPage requires special files for every HTML page that exists in a Web, the non-FrontPage Web needs to be converted so that it includes these additional FrontPage files.

The simplest way to make this conversion is to install the FrontPage Server Extensions on the Web server. In some situations you may be unable to install the extensions on the server. This article describes several ways you can convert the content to a FrontPage Web.

Method 1: Importing Local Files (FrontPage 97)

If your content is stored on the hard disk of your computer or if it is accessible from a network share, follow these steps:

  1. Install the FrontPage Server Extensions on one of the Web servers that is included with FrontPage 97.
  2. Start FrontPage Explorer.
  3. On the File menu, point to New, and click FrontPage Web.
  4. Select Import Web Wizard in the Web Templates and Wizards list and click OK.
  5. Type a name for your Web in the "Web Server or File Location" box.

    Typically, the default name that appears in the "Web Server or File Location" box is the name of the Web server you opened when you started FrontPage Explorer. Use the default server.
  6. Type a name for the new Web in the "Name of New FrontPage Web" box.

    If you want your existing content to be the root Web, leave the "Name of New FrontPage Web" box blank.
  7. Click OK.

    If you are prompted to type in an administrator's password, use the password that you specified when you installed the FrontPage Server Extensions.
  8. In the Source Directory box on the Import Web Wizard - Choose Directory panel, type the path to your files. If you are unsure of the path, click Browse, locate the folder that contains your content, and click OK. Click Next.
  9. In the Files list on the Import Web Wizard - Edit File List panel, select the files that you want to exclude. Use the CTRL or SHIFT key and click to select non-contiguous or contiguous files. Click Exclude.
  10. Click Next.
  11. Click Finish.

    NOTE: The import process makes a copy of the original files and places them in your Web content folder. You may either delete the files from the original folder or keep them as backup copies.

Method 2: Importing Non-Local Files (FrontPage 97)

If your content is not stored on your computer or accessible from a network share, copy the files to your computer using the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) or other media (such as a floppy disk) and then follow the steps in the "Method 1: Importing Local Files (FrontPage 97)" section.

Method 3: Importing Non-Local Files

If you cannot import your files as described in the "Method 2: Importing Non-Local Files (FrontPage 97)" section, do the following:

  1. Start FrontPage Explorer, and create a new Web, by following these steps:

    1. On the File menu, point to New, and click FrontPage Web.
    2. Select Normal Web and click OK.
    3. Type the name of your Web server in the "Web Server or File Location" box, or select it from the list.

      Typically, the default name that appears in the "Web Server or File Location" box is the name of the Web server you opened when you started FrontPage Explorer. Use the default server.
    4. Type a name for the new Web in the "Name of New FrontPage Web" box.

      If you want your existing content to be the root Web, leave the "Name of New FrontPage Web" box blank.
    5. Click OK.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Show FrontPage Editor.
  3. On the File menu, click Open, and then click the Other Location tab.
  4. Select the From Location option and type the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) for the page you want to import.
  5. On the File menu, click Save.
  6. Type a title for your page in the Page Title box, type a file name in the "File Path within your FrontPage Web" box, and click OK.

    NOTE: Use the original file name or you may break existing hyperlinks.
  7. When prompted to save linked files, confirm the URL and then save the file.
  8. Repeat steps 4 through 8 for each page you want to import.

Method 4: Importing Files with Limited Access to the Server

To import files from a server where you have limited access, follow these steps:

  1. To store the existing files, create a new folder in your server's Content directory.

    NOTE: The location of the server's Content directory is listed in the FrontPage Server Administrator.
  2. Use the name of the existing Web (the Web you want to import) to name the new folder. For example, if the existing Web is called "MyWeb," name the new folder "MyWeb" (without the quotation marks).
  3. Transfer the existing Web files to the new folder.

    To do this, use FTP over an Internet connection or, if the files are on a local area network (LAN), use the file, copy, or move commands for your network operating system.
  4. Start FrontPage Explorer.
  5. On the File Menu, click New Web.
  6. Select Empty Web, and click OK.
  7. Enter the name of your FrontPage-compliant Web server and the existing Web name and then click OK.
The FrontPage Explorer will create the necessary files and the Web will function as if it had been created using FrontPage.
