This article was previously published under Q151342 SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to print from Works 3.0 under Windows 95, you may
encounter one of the following error messages:
Error while printing.
Setting in the Printer Setup dialog may be incorrect. If the
error is specified, correct it and try again.
Printer is not connected to the proper port.
Works could not print because it could not find the printer.
Check that the port specified in the Windows Control Panel is
the port which your printer is connected to, and check to make
sure your printer is connected to the proper port on your
computer.
Printer driver file not found or not valid.
The driver file for the printer you have specified is missing
or not valid. You may have to run the Windows Setup program to
reinstall the printer.
CAUSE
The error messages above may occur if you are printing to a shared printer
with a long share name, or if you drag a Works data file to a printer icon.
Works 3.0 does not support long file names.
RESOLUTION
If the printer is shared over a network, verify the share name is 11
characters or less and contains only alphabetic or numeric characters. The
share name cannot not contain a space character.
Verify the Printer Share Name
To verify the printer share name, do the following:
- Click the Start button, point to Settings and then click Printers.
- Right-click the printer driver for the printer you are using
and click Properties.
- On the Details tab of the Properties dialog box, check the path under
Print To The Following Port.
If your computer is connected to a shared printer, you will see something
similar to, \\Computer\Printer, where Computer is the computer on the
network where the printer is shared, and Printer is the share name. If
either of these names have more than 11 characters or contain a space, they
must be renamed at the computer sharing the printer so both the computer
name and share name contain 11 or fewer characters. You will need to
contact the system administrator or the operator of the computer sharing
the printer to make this change.
If you drag a Works data file to a printer icon to print it, you must
verify the printer name contains 11 characters or less and does not include
space characters.
Change the Printer Name
To change the printer name, do the following:
- Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
- Right-click on the printer driver for the printer you are using
and click Rename.
- Enter a new name for the printer, using 11 or fewer alphabetic or
numeric characters, with no spaces.
