When you attempt to install one of the programs listed at the beginning of this article on a Microsoft Windows 95-based or Microsoft Windows 98-based computer, you may receive the following error message:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If you click Details, you receive the following error message:
Acmsetup caused an exception 03H in module Msvfw32.dll.
In addition, when you attempt to start one of the programs listed at the beginning of this article, you may receive one of the following error messages:
Error Starting Program. A required .dll, Msvfw32.dll, was not found. The C:\Windows\System\Msvfw32.dll file appears to be corrupt.
Reinstall the file, and then try again. Homepub caused an exception O3H in module Msvfw32.dll
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if one or more of the following files are missing,
damaged, or the incorrect version.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, delete the Msvfw32.dll and Msvideo.dll files on the hard disk, and then extract new copies of the files from the Windows 95/98 CD-ROM or installation disks. To do this, use the appropriate method for your version of Windows.
Windows 98- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type sfc, and then
click OK.
- Click Extract one file from installation disk,
and then type msvfw32.dll in the Specify the system file you would like to restore box.
- In the Restore From box, type the following line
where cd-rom is the drive letter of the CD-ROM
drive that contains the Windows 98 CD-ROM.
- In the Destination Folder box, type the following line, and
then click OK
where drive is the hard disk on which Windows 98 is
installed and windows is the folder in which
Windows 98 is installed.
- When you are prompted to restart the computer, click No.
- Repeat steps 3-5 to extract the Msvideo.dll file.
- When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.
Windows 95- Click Start, click Shut Down, and then click Restart in MS-DOS mode.
- At the command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after
you type each line:
cd system
del msvfw32.dll
del msvideo.dll
- Extract new copies of the Msvfw32.dll and Msvideo.dll files to the
Windows\System folder. To do this, use the appropriate method for your
version of Windows 95.
Windows 95 CD-ROM- Insert the Windows 95 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
- At the command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER
after you type each line
extract cd-rom:\win95\win95_08.cab
msvfw32.dll
extract cd-rom:\win95\win95_08.cab
msvideo.dll
exit
where cd-rom is the letter of the CD-ROM drive.
Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2) CD-ROM- Insert the Windows 95 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
- At the command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER
after you type each line
extract cd-rom:\win95\win95_12.cab
msvfw32.dll
extract cd-rom:\win95\win95_12.cab
msvideo.dll
exit
where cd-rom is the letter of the CD-ROM drive.
Windows 95 DMF disks- Insert Windows 95 Disk 8 into the floppy disk drive.
- At the command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER
after you type each line
extract floppy:\win95_08.cab msvfw32.dll
extract floppy:\win95_08.cab msvideo.dll
exit
where floppy is the letter of the floppy disk
drive.
Windows 95 non-DMF disks- Insert Windows 95 Disk 13 into the floppy disk drive.
- At the command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER
after you type each line
extract floppy:\win95_13.cab msvfw32.dll
extract floppy:\win95_13.cab msvideo.dll
exit
where floppy is the letter of the floppy disk
drive.
