SYMPTOMS

When you try to start Microsoft Works version 3.0, you receive the following error message:
This program requires a newer version of Windows.

CAUSE

This error message occurs if you have installed a program which has incompatible versions of some dynamic linked libraries for object linking or embedding (OLE dlls). These files can be left behind if you remove Windows 95 and install Windows 3.1x. These files can also be installed by programs which uses OLE 2.0 and change your current .dll files to another version.

RESOLUTION

You must remove or rename the incompatible OLE files and run Works Setup again to resolve this problem. To rename these files do the following:

  1. If Windows is running, exit Windows.
  2. At the MS-DOS command prompt, change to the Windows\System folder. For example, type:

    cd \Windows\System

  3. Rename the following files:

    Compobj.dll
    Ole2.dll
    Ole2.reg
    Ole2conv.dll
    Ole2disp.dll
    Ole2nls.dll
    Ole2prox.dll
    Storage.dll

To rename these files type the following at the MS-DOS prompt:

    ren <filename> <new filename>

For instance to rename Compobj.dll to Compobj.old type the following:

    ren Compobj.dll Compobj.old

  4. Change to the Works Setup folder. For example, if you installed Works to the default Msworks folder, type:

    cd \Msworks\Setup

  5. Type:

    del Setup.stf

  6. Start Windows and reinstall Works 3.0 to the default Msworks folder.

MORE INFORMATION

If these steps do not resolve the problem, there may be additional files in the Windows\System folder which need to be removed and reinstalled. Begin at Step 1 to rename the following files and reinstall Works:

Ctl3dv2.dll
Pubole.dll
Typelib.dll
Wksole.dll
Wksoleui.dll
