BUG: Startup of MS DTC Admin Components Fails on Client (150385)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 6.5

This article was previously published under Q150385
Bug#: 14950 (6.50)

SYMPTOMS

When accessing the Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MS DTC) from SQL Enterprise Manager, you get the following error message:
Startup of MS DTC administrative components has failed.
You may not have permissions to manager the remote MS DTC or MS DTC does
not support the current national language.

CAUSE

This problem occurs only when the SQL Server utilities are installed on a computer that does not contain the actual SQL Server.

During installation of the client components, the setup routine fails to correctly register the Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MS DTC) OLE components.

WORKAROUND

If you double-click the Mssql\Binn\Msdtc.Reg file in File Manager (or Explorer), the required OLE registrations will be made and the problem is solved.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server version 6.5.
