This article was previously published under Q150039 SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to insert an object, such as a WordArt or Note-It object,
into a document in Microsoft Works for Windows version 4.0 or later,
you may receive the following error message:
Application not available.
The object was created with an application that is no longer available
or not properly installed.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the registry entries for the object class are missing or incorrect.
This behavior can also occur in Works 4.x if the Mfc40.dll file is missing.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented.
Verify that the Mfc40.dll File Is Installed
If you are running Works 4.0 or Works 4.5, verify that the Mfc40.dll file is installed in the \ Windows\System folder:
- Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
- In the Named box, type mfc40.dll.
- In the Look in box, click the hard disk on which
Microsoft Windows is installed, and then click Find Now.
- If the Mfc40.dll file in the list of found files is installed
in the \Windows\System folder, proceed to the next
method.
If the Mfc40.dll file in the list of found files is not installed in the
\Windows\System folder, or if the Mfc40.dll file is
missing, proceed to the next step.
- Insert the Microsoft Works CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. Press and
hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM to prevent the program
from starting automatically.
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type the following line, and then click
OK
where cd-rom is the drive letter of your CD-ROM
drive.
- Right-click the Mfc40.dll file, and then click Copy.
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type the following line, and then click
OK
where cd-rom is the drive letter of the hard disk
on which Windows is installed, and windows is the
folder in which Windows is installed.
- On the Edit menu, click Paste.
- Close all open windows.
If the issue continues to occur, proceed to the next method.
Re-registering a Shared Component
A shared component is a program that is shared by other programs and cannot be run outside of the host program. Microsoft WordArt, Microsoft Draw, and Microsoft ClipArt Gallery are all shared components.
You can re-register most 32-bit shared components by running the executable file for the componenent. However, you cannot use this method to re-register Microsoft Note-it or Microsoft Equations Editor version 3.01. Microsoft Note-it is a 16-bit shared component installed by Works for Windows, and Microsoft Equations Editor version 3.01 is a 32-bit shared component installed by Microsoft Works 2000. To re-register these components, proceed to the "Remove and Reinstall Works" method later in this article.
To re-register one of the following 32-bit shared components
- Microsoft ClipArt Gallery, version 2.0
- Microsoft Draw, version 1.01
- Microsoft WordArt, versions 2.51, 3.0
- Microsoft Equations Editor, version 2.1
run the executable (.exe) file for the shared component that you want to re-register. To do this:
- Quit Microsoft Works, if it is running.
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type the following line (inluding the
quotation marks), and then click OK
"drive:\program files\common files\microsoft
shared"
where drive is the drive letter of the hard disk on
which Microsoft Windows is installed. - On the View menu or Tools menu, click Options
or Folder Options.
- Click the View tab, click to clear the Hide
MS-DOS file extensions for file types that are registered check box,
and then click OK.
- Double-click the folder for the component you want to re-register,
and then double-click the executable file for the component.
The following table lists the folder and executable file for each
self-registering shared component installed by Works 4.x or later.
|
ClipArt Gallery | Artgalry | Artgalry.exe | Microsoft Draw | Msdraw | Msdraw.exe | Microsoft WordArt | WordArt | Wrdart32.exe | Equations Editor | Equation | Eqnedt32.exe |
- When you receive a message stating that the component is now
re-gistered to run on your computer or that the component must be
started from within another application, click OK.
- Close all open windows.
If the issue continues to occur, proceed to the next method.
