Works 3.0 and Windows 95: Err Msg Saving to Floppy Drive (149424)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Works 3.0
  • the operating system: Microsoft Windows 95

This article was previously published under Q149424

SYMPTOMS

If you are running Microsoft Works 3.0 with Windows 95, you may receive the following error message when you attempt to save a word processor or database file to a floppy disk:
System Error: The file you are trying to open is already in use by another program. Quit the other program, and then try again.
When you click the Cancel button on the error message, the file is saved to the floppy disk.

CAUSE

This error occurs when using the Canon Bubblejet printer driver versions 3.20 and 3.40 for Windows 95, which are supplied by Canon and the Panasonic KX-P6100 GDI driver. You can check the version of the driver by choosing the About dialog box. Follow these steps to view the About dialog box:
  1. With your Works document open, click Print from the File menu.
  2. Click the Properties button.
  3. Click the About button.
For instance, the 3.20 version reads:
Canon BJC-XXXX Windows 95 Printer Driver Version 3.20 (November 21,
   1995)

where XXXX is the model of the printer. This is not the same driver as version 3.2 which ships with Windows 95 and shows the following information in the About dialog box:
   Canon Bubble-Jet BJC-XXXX Version 3.2

The problem may occur if any of the following printers are set as the default Windows printer:
  • BJC-70
  • BJC-210
  • BJC-600
  • BJC-600e
  • BJC-800
  • BJC-4000
  • BJC-4100
  • KX-P6100 GDI

RESOLUTION

To avoid this error, exit Works, set your default printer to something other than the Canon or Panasonic supplied printer driver and then restart Works.

NOTE: In the case of the Panasonic driver, you can also eliminate this error by installing the Panasonic KX-P6100 PCL driver and setting it as the default.

NOTE: You can still use the Canon supplied versions 3.20 an 3.40 of the driver to print from Works, but you must set the default printer to something else to avoid the error. If you do this, you should select the Canon printer from the Printer Setup command under the File menu of Works.

To change the default printer in Windows 95 do the following:
  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
  2. With your right mouse button, click the printer driver that you want to set as your default printer, and then click Set As Default.

MORE INFORMATION

You can also remove the version 3.20 or 3.40 driver supplied by Canon and install the printer drivers that ship with Windows 95 (which do not cause the error when you save to a floppy disk). The following printers have drivers that are shipped with the Windows 95 software:
  • BJC-70
  • BJC-600
  • BJC-600e
  • BJC-800
  • BJC-4000
If you are using the BJC-4100 or the BJC-210, you can install one of the following emulation drivers:
Printer Emulation
------- ---------
BJC-4100 IBM Proprinter x24e
                   Epson LQ-2550
BJC-210 IBM Proprinter x24e
                   Epson LQ-510

To install one of the drivers that ships with Windows 95, do the following:
  1. Exit Works.
  2. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
  3. Double-click the Add Printer icon and follow the instructions in the Add Printer Wizard.
  4. In the List of Manufacturers, select Canon (or Epson or IBM, if you want to use an emulation).
  5. On the Printers list, select the appropriate Printer model.
