Can't Edit Embedded Spreadsheet or Word Object (145446)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to edit a Word object that was inserted into a Microsoft Excel worksheet, or when you try to edit a Microsoft Excel worksheet inserted into Word, you receive one of the following error messages:
Error: Word cannot obtain the data for the <filename> link.

-or-

Cannot start the source application for this object.

CAUSE

The inserted or copied file contains an extended ANSI character (such as international letters) in its filename. Word does not represent the extended characters in the filename correctly, and thus, Word cannot identify the file's location.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Word for Windows 95, version 7.0a.

RESOLUTION

Upgrade to Word for Windows 95, version 7.0a.
