SYMPTOMS

The Accept Revisions option (for Microsoft Word 2.x-7.x) or the Accept or Reject Changes from Track Changes (on the Tools menu of Microsoft Word 97) does not remove strikethrough formatted text in documents converted from WordPerfect 5.x or WordPerfect 6.x.

CAUSE

Text marked in WordPerfect documents as "Strikeout" is converted to strikethrough character formatting by all versions of Word for Windows. This strikethrough text is not recognized as "deleted text" by the Revision or Track Changes features of Microsoft Word.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

To remove strikethrough text in a converted WordPerfect document:

  1. On the Edit menu, click Replace.
  2. Place the insertion point in the Find What box.
  3. Click the Format button, click Font, select the Strikethrough check box, and then click OK.
  4. Place the insertion point in the Replace With box.
  5. Click the Format button, click Font, clear the Strikethrough check box, and then click OK.
  6. Click Replace All or Find Next.
  7. Click Close.

MORE INFORMATION

Certain documents use the Strikethrough format for other purposes than to mark text for deletion by the Revisions or Track Changes function. For example, in WordPerfect, there is no difference between text that has been formatted as Strikeout using the Compare Screen and Disk Documents function and text that has been manually formatted as Strikeout. Since the Strikethrough format can be used for other purposes in other applications, the Revisions or Track Changes function does not designate this text as "deleted text".
