DOCERR: Word Startup Switch /t Usage Incorrect (143302)

SYMPTOMS

Online help in Word lists an incorrect usage of the /t startup switch.

WORKAROUND

To start Word and then open a document as a template, type /t followed by the name of the document. There is no space between the /t and the name of the document. For example, the following is a correct use of the /t switch: 
   c:\msoffice\winword\winword.exe /tc:\msoffice\winword\doc1.doc

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the products listed at the beginning of this article. Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Microsoft Word for Windows 95, version 7.0 provides an additional startup switch which may be used from the MS-DOS prompt or from the command line of the Word icon. The new switch, /t, provides for creating a new document based on the specified document. This allows for the specified document to be treated similar to a template. That is, the text of the document will be transferred to the new document, but there may not be any macros, AutoText, tool bars, and so on available since this new document is based on the specified document (which is not a template). The new document will be attached to Normal.dot. Any macros, AutoText, tool bars, etc. available from the Normal.dot will be available in the new document.
