Word 7: Shortcut Keys Do Not Function Correctly (143224)

SYMPTOMS

The following shortcut key assignments do not function as they are defined in Word Help.

NOTE: Some third-party programs may also affect shortcut key functionality.

The following list shows the shortcut keys and the functions they actually perform.

Print Preview

CTRL+UP ARROW        Moves up one line
CTRL+DOWN ARROW      Moves down one line
CTRL+LEFT ARROW      Moves one word left
CTRL+RIGHT ARROW     Moves one word right

Move within a Document

SHIFT+F5             Goes to a previous document, if open; otherwise
                     nothing happens
CTRL+ALT+Z           Nothing happens

Activate the Ruler

CTRL+SHIFT+F10       Nothing happens

CAUSE

Print Preview

These shortcut keys work the same as when you are in Normal or Page Layout view.

Moving within a Document

The shortcut key assigned to the GoBack function does not function correctly if Internet Assistant is installed on your system.

Activate the Ruler

CTRL+SHIFT+F10 is assigned to WW2_RulerMode, a WordBasic command that is used for backwards compatibility with Word for Windows 2.0. By default, there is no shortcut key assignment given to the View Ruler command in Word 7.0.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for Windows 95 version 7.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use any of the following workarounds.

Print Preview

To move to the first page when zoomed out, press CTRL+HOME.

To move to the last page when zoomed out, press CTRL+END.

Moving within a Document

Method 1

Disable the Wiahtm32.wll. To do this, click Templates on the File menu, clear the Wiahtm32.wll check box, and then click OK.

Method 2

Create a macro to reassign the GoBack command to the shortcut key when Internet Assistant is installed.

  1. On the Tools menu, click Macro.
  2. In the Macro Name box type "GoBack" (without the quotation marks), and then click the Create button. You will see the following in the macro editing window:
    Sub MAIN
GoBack
End Sub
  3. On the File menu, click Save.
  4. Click Customize on the Tools menu, and then select the Keyboard tab.
  5. Select Edit in the Categories list box.
  6. Select GoBack in the Commands list.
  7. With the insertion point in the Press New Shortcut Key box, type SHIFT+F5, and then click Assign.
  8. Click Close.

Activate the Ruler

To assign a keyboard shortcut to this feature, do the following:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Customize, and then select the Keyboard tab.
  2. In the Categories list, select View.
  3. In the Commands list, select ViewRuler.
  4. In the Press New Shortcut Key box, type a shortcut key combination, such as ALT+K, and then click Assign.
  5. Click Close.
