PUB: Problems Saving Publication After Floppy Disk Removed (142891)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher for Windows 3.0

This article was previously published under Q142891

SYMPTOMS

If you open a publication from a floppy disk, remove the disk, and then try to save your publication, the following message may appear:
Publisher cannot create a temporary working file.
Note: This same error message may appear when you have opened a Publisher document from a floppy drive and attempt to save it to the hard drive.

CAUSE

Unless the publication is very small, Publisher does not load the whole publication into memory. If you try to save the publication, Publisher needs to access the original on the floppy disk. If the disk has been removed, Publisher fails. This problem is not limited to floppy disks; if you open a publication from any type of removable drive, you can get similar symptoms.

RESOLUTION

Be sure the source disk, drive, or cartridge is available before you try to save your publications.

To copy a publication that is on one floppy disk to another floppy disk, use one of the following methods:
  • Open the publication from the first floppy disk and save it to the hard drive. Insert the new disk and save the publication to it.
  • Copy the publication to the hard drive. Insert the new floppy disk and copy the publication to it.
  • If you have more than one floppy drive, copy or open and save the publication from one floppy disk directly to the other.

MORE INFORMATION

When clearing the error message above by clicking OK, the same error message may reappear several times before Publisher generates the following warning:
Due to low memory or use of a floppy other than the one you started with, Publisher has had to rename your publication A:\FILENAME.TMP. To resume, close all programs including Publisher; then restart Publisher and open the file. You may rename the publication.
Where FILENAME.TMP is the new filename with a tmp extention. If trying to save to the floppy drive with no floppy present, Publisher will rename and save the publication to Publisher's default directory.

If you try to save a publication under a different name or to a different location (after its disk has been removed), you may get the following error message:
A:\ is not accessible. The device is not ready.
If you click Retry, you may receive the following error message:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, please contact your program vendor.
If, however, you click Cancel, you may see the Publisher Save As dialog box. If you click Cancel in this dialog box, you are returned to your publication.
