SYMPTOMS

If you install Works 4.0, 4.0a, 4.5 or 4.5a as a workstation, (you install all the program files on the server), over a local installation of Works 3.0, (all the program files are on your computer), the Works 3.0 templates will not appear in the Works 4.0 Task Launcher.

CAUSE

When Works 4.0 is installed locally over a Works 3.0 local installation, the Works 3.0 templates are given long file names. The templates appear in the Works 4.0 Task Wizards section of the Task Launcher under Works 3.0 Templates. In a Works 4.0 local installation, Setup looks for the Works 3.0 templates in the \Msworks\Wkstmpl folder. During a workstation installation of Works 4.0 over a local installation of Works 3.0, Works 4.0 Setup uses the network path and does not detect the \Msworks\Wkstmpl folder.

RESOLUTION

If Works 3.0 is installed on your computer and you want to put Works 4.0 on a server using the Workstation installation, you can still access the Works 3.0 templates. To install Works 4.x as a Workstation and still use the Works 3.0 templates, do the following:

  1. Run Works 4.0 Setup and click Custom installation. Install only the program and setup files. This installs the program and setup files on your computer, locates the Works 3.0 templates in the \Msworks\Wkstmpl folder, and gives them long file names.
  2. Run Works 4.0 Maintenance Mode Setup and click Remove All. This removes the Works 4.0 files that were installed locally, but leaves the renamed templates in your \Msworks\Wkstmpl folder.
  3. Run the Works 4.0 Setup again and click Workstation installation.
  4. If you want all workstation users of Works 4.0 to access the templates, copy the renamed Works 3.0 templates to the \Msworks\Template folder on the server. This allows workstation users to access the templates through the TaskWizards section of the Task Launcher under Shared Templates.

If you want to give only one workstation user access to the templates, copy the renamed Works 3.0 templates from the \Msworks\Wkstmpl folder to:

    x:\<path>\Msworks\Template

where X:\<path> is the path to the MSWorks folder on your computer. You must create this folder if you have not previously created and saved any templates in Works 4.0. The workstation user finds the templates in the TaskWizards section of the Task Launcher under User Defined Templates.
