This article was previously published under Q141825 SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Excel, when you use the Function Wizard, a custom function may
appear in a category that is different from the category assigned to that
custom function. This problem will occur only if you have assigned a
function to a category that you created.
CAUSE
The built-in categories appear at the beginning of the category list in the
Function Wizard. The order for these built-in categories does not change;
instead, the custom categories are added to the end of the category list.
When you assign a function to a specific category, Microsoft Excel actually
assigns the function a number that represents that category (the categories
are numbered as they appear in the Function Wizard). When you open a new
workbook in Microsoft Excel, any custom categories contained in that book
are simply appended to the current list of categories. Therefore, the order in
which workbooks are opened can effect the order that custom categories
appear in the Function Wizard.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, assign the function to one of the built-in
categories since the order for these categories will not change.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the products listed at the
beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post
new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes
available.
