OFF97: Professional Edition Setup Leaves Standard STF File (139973)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Office for Windows 95 Professional edition
- Microsoft Office 97 Professional Edition for Windows
This article was previously published under Q139973 SYMPTOMS
When you install a Professional Edition of Microsoft Office over a
previous installation of a Standard Edition of Microsoft Office, the
Standard Edition's setup table file (STF file) is not removed from its
folder on your hard drive:
Version of
Office STF File Folder
----------------------------------------------------------------------
97 Off97std.stf Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Setup
7.0 Off95std.stf MSOffice\Office\Setup
CAUSE
This behavior is by design of the Setup programs of the Professional
Editions of Microsoft Office 97 and Microsoft Office for Windows 95.
MORE INFORMATION
There are no pointers within the registry that reference the Off95std.stf
and Off97std.stf files after an installation of Microsoft Office
Professional 7.0 or 97. However, if you double-click this file, Setup for
the standard version of Office is started if the .stf extension is
associated with Acme.exe. If the .stf file is not associated with
Acme.exe or some other application, then Setup may display the error
message that Setup could not access the required initialization file,
which is a file from Office Standard. If the .stf file has been
associated with Microsoft Excel, then no error is produced; instead the
.stf file is opened in Microsoft Excel.
