SUMMARY

This article describes how Microsoft Money calculates the starting balance used when balancing your account and describes how to generate a report that illustrates the balancing process.

To reach the balance, Money starts with your opening balance and then adds all reconciled deposits and subtracts all reconciled payments.

You can create a report to show the transactions Money uses to determine the starting balance. To generate the report, use the appropriate method for your version of Money.

Money 99 and Later

  1. Open the account for which you want to generate the report.
  2. On the navigation bar, click Reports, and then click Reports Gallery. Money 99 and Money 2000 users, click Reports.
  3. In the left pane, click Spending Habits, and then double-click Account Transactions.
  4. Click Customize.
  5. Click Reset, if available, to clear any other customization.
    1. Click Yes to confirm the reset.
    2. Click Customize again.
  6. Select the present title in the Title box, press DELETE, and change the title to Starting Balance Report.
  7. Click the Details tab.
  8. In the Status list, click Reconciled Transactions.
  9. Click OK.

Money 98

  1. Open the account for which you want to generate the report.
  2. On the navigation bar, click Reports.
  3. In the left pane, click Spending Habits, and then double-click Account Transactions.
  4. Click Customize.
  5. Click Reset (if available) to clear any other customization.
  6. Under Include Transactions, click Select Transactions.

    This opens the Select Transactions window.
  7. Click the Details tab.
  8. In the Status list, click Reconciled Transactions.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Change the title to Starting Balance Report.
  11. Click Apply, and then click View.

    The resulting report shows the account opening balance and all reconciled transactions.

    The Grand Total figure at the bottom of the report is the Starting Balance used when reconciling.
  12. To save this report for future use, click Add To Favorites.

Money 97

  1. Open the account for which you want to generate the report.
  2. Click Go To, and then click Report & Chart Gallery.
  3. Click Spending Habits, and then click Account Transactions.
  4. Click Go To Report/Chart.
  5. Click Customize.
  6. Click Reset to clear any other customization.
  7. In the Include Transactions section, click Select Transactions.

    This opens the Select Transaction window.
  8. Click the Details tab.
  9. In the Status list, click Reconciled Transactions.
  10. Click OK.
  11. Change the title to Starting Balance Report.
  12. Click View.

    The resulting report shows the account opening balance and all reconciled transactions.
