- Microsoft Office for Windows 95 Professional edition
- Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows
This article was previously published under Q138891 SYMPTOMS
When you run the Microsoft Office Setup program in maintenance mode, if
you are running a workstation installation of Microsoft Office
Professional on a computer running shared Windows 95, you may receive any
of the following error messages:
Setup could not remove the file:
'\\<servername>\<sharename>\system\mfc40.dll'
Abort Retry Ignore
Setup could not remove the file:
'\\<servername>\<sharename>\system\olepro32.dll'
Abort Retry Ignore
Setup could not remove the file:
'\\<servername>\<sharename>\system\msvcrt40.dll'
Abort Retry Ignore
where <servername> and <sharename> are the names of the server and share
you are accessing to run the shared installation of Windows.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because the Microsoft Office Professional Setup
program copies files to the shared Windows location on the network server
and then attempts to remove them. Normally, you have read-only access to
this shared Windows location, so the Setup program may generate one of
the error messages above.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, click Ignore when these error messages are
displayed. The Setup program will complete setup successfully.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products
listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem
and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it
