Works 95: Works Spreadsheet Files Mistaken for Lotus 1-2-3 Files (137743)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Works 4.5
  • Microsoft Works for Windows 95, version 4.0
  • Microsoft Works for Windows 95, version 4.0 4.0a

This article was previously published under Q137743

SYMPTOMS

When you start a Works spreadsheet from Windows Explorer or File Manager, the computer may attempt to launch Lotus 1-2-3, and may generate an error message such as
Not a valid worksheet file.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you install Lotus 1-2-3 Release 4 on a machine that already has Works version 4.0 or 4.5 installed on it. If this is the case, registry entries may become confused and cause Works files to become associated with Lotus 1-2-3.

RESOLUTION

To correctly associate Works spreadsheets with the Works program, follow these steps:

  1. In Windows 95, click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Run dialog box, type winfile, and then click OK. This will launch File Manager.
  3. In File Manager, click any Works spreadsheet icon. (Do not double-click it.)

NOTE: You may have to switch to a different drive or folder.
  4. On the File menu, click Associate.
  5. In the Associate With list, click Microsoft Works Sheet Or Chart, and then click OK.

NOTE: If Microsoft Works Sheet Or Chart does not appear in the list, you can click Browse to find the Msworks.exe.
  6. On the File menu, click Exit.
Now when you double-click a Works 4.0 spreadsheet from Windows Explorer, it will launch Works instead of Lotus 1-2-3.

MORE INFORMATION

If Works 95 is installed on a machine that already contains Lotus 1-2-3 Release 4, Works does not re-associate the existing Lotus 1-2-3 files.
