WD6X: How To Import MacWord 4.0 Custom Dictionary in Word 6.0 (137671)

SYMPTOMS

When you run the spelling checker, you may receive the following error message:
There is no custom dictionary <name of 4.0 custom dictionary>. Do you want to create it now?

CAUSE

Word versions 6.0 and later do not recognize the Word 4.0 custom dictionary in its native format.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use either of the following methods.

Method 1: Convert the Word 4.0 Custom Dictionary

  1. In Word 6.0 and 98, open the Word 4.0 custom dictionary.
  2. On the File menu, click Save As.
  3. In the Save File As Type list, click Speller Custom Dictionary.
  4. Click Save.
You can now add the dictionary as a custom dictionary.

Method 2: Copy and Paste the 4.0 Dictionary into a Custom Dictionary

  1. In Word 6.0 and 98, open the Word 4.0 custom dictionary.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
  3. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
  4. In Word 98, click Preferences on the Tools menu, and then click the Spelling & Grammar tab.

    In Word 6.0, click Options on the Tools menu, and then click the Spelling tab.
  5. Under Custom Dictionary, click Dictionaries.
  6. Click to select the default Custom Dictionary, click Edit and then click OK.

    -or-

    Click New to create a new custom dictionary. Type the name of the custom dictionary and then click Save
  7. On the Edit menu, click Paste.
  8. Save and close the custom dictionary.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 6.0, 6.0.1 and 98. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
