PRJ41: No Title Prompt/Wrong Name Field Using Save To Database (137255)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project for Windows 95 4.1

This article was previously published under Q137255

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you use the Save To Database command in your project, one of the following symptoms may occur:

  • You may not be prompted to enter a project title, even though you have not saved the project or entered a value in the Title field.

    -or-

  • When you open the database to which you saved your project data, the Name field may contain the incorrect project name, such as Project1.

CAUSE

When you use the Save To Database command to save your project data to a database file, four tables are added to the database: Project, Resource Assignments, Resources, and Tasks. The value in the project Title field (Properties dialog box, File menu) is added to the Name field in the Project table.

If your project does not have a title (you have not opened the Properties dialog box and you have not saved the project file) you are prompted to enter a title for the project.

However, if you open the Properties dialog box for your project, the name of the unsaved project, such as Project1, is automatically entered in the Title field. Because of this, if you open the Properties dialog box in your project, you are not prompted to enter a title for the project when you save the project to a database, even if the project file has not been saved.

Additionally, if you save the project file before you use the Save To Database command (after displaying the Properties dialog box), the Name field in the Project table in the database contains the unsaved project name, such as Project1, instead of the saved project filename.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior so that the name field in the Project table in your database contains the correct title for your project, use the appropriate method below.

Method 1: Before you save a project to a database:

When you display the Properties dialog box for a project that you have not saved, enter the title that you want the project to have. Otherwise, the project Title field contains the unsaved project name.

Method 2: If you have already saved a project to a database:

  1. In your project, click Properties on the File menu.
  2. Enter the title that you want for the project in the Title field and click OK.
  3. On the Tools menu, click Multiple Projects, and then click Save To Database.
  4. Choose Yes to replace the existing project in the database.

The Name field in the Project table in the database now contains the correct title for your project.
