Works and Bookshelf CD-ROM: Cannot Reinstall Program (137186)

SYMPTOMS

If you manually move or delete the any of the programs listed in the applies to section of this article, you may be unable to reinstall the program.

Symptoms of this issue may include any of the following error messages:

  • Uninstaller Error! An error occurred while trying to remove Microsoft Works 4.0. Uninstallation has been canceled.
  • Bookshelf 1995. Could not locate Bookshelf application.
  • Microsoft Bookshelf '95. The following files are missing from the system: bs9532.exe, deco_32.dll, bsmmplyr.exe, bs95sp32.exe. Do you want to reinstall?"
  • Setup Error 688! A command line option has been used, which is valid only in Maintenance mode.
  • Setup Error 723! The processing of top-level information has failed.
  • Microsoft Bookshelf '95 Setup was not completed successfully.
  • Microsoft Works! Cannot find the file "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Reference\Bookshelf 95\bs9532.exe". Run Setup again.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, run the Setup program for Works 95 or the Setup program for Bookshelf. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type the following line, and then click OK
          <drive>:\<program>\Setup.exe
    						
    where <drive> is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive, and <program> is Works or Bookshelf.
  3. Follow the instructions on the screen to reinstall Works or Bookshelf.

MORE INFORMATION

When you insert the Works and Bookshelf CD-ROM, the Setup program in the the root folder of the CD-ROM is started. This setup program cannot proceed if files have been moved or deleted manually.

NOTE: This Setup program is also run from the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.

WARNING: Microsoft does not recommend that you manually move or delete programs designed for Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98.
