SUMMARY

This article lists steps you can take to troubleshoot faxing problems in Word that occur when you use the File Send command while running Word under Windows 95.

MORE INFORMATION

Once you have created a document in Word for Windows, use the following steps to send a fax to yourself to determine whether you have a rendering problem or an address problem:

  1. On the File menu, click Send.

If Send is not available on the File menu, you must install Microsoft Exchange using Windows 95 Setup. See "To Install Microsoft Exchange" later in this article.
  2. In the Select Profile dialog box, select "MS Exchange Settings" as the Profile name and click OK.
  3. In the New Message dialog box, the Word document will appear as an attachment and the insertion point should be blinking in the "To:" line.
  4. In the "To:" line, type [fax:me].
  5. On the File menu, click Send Options.
  6. In the Message Format option group, click Not Editable and click OK.
  7. On the File menu, click Send.
  8. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Word.
  9. On the Windows 95 Desktop, double-click the Inbox icon. The fax should appear in the Inbox. Double-click it to see if you have the full fax.
By using the [fax:me] and Not Editable format, you force Microsoft Fax to render and send the fax to your inbox. If this works, you can focus on an address or fax modem problem as the issue.

To Install Microsoft Exchange

  1. Click the Windows Start button, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Click the Windows Setup tab.
  4. Under Components, highlight Microsoft Exchange and then click Details.
  5. In the Microsoft Exchange dialog box, be sure that both check boxes under Components contain a check mark and then click OK.
  6. Click OK.

At this point, the Windows 95 Setup program will install the Microsoft Exchange program. You may be prompted to insert the appropriate Windows 95 disks.
