PUB: "Cannot Update Object" Message After Opening Publisher File (137131)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Publisher for Windows 3.0
This article was previously published under Q137131 SYMPTOMS
If you open a publication that contains a link to another file, and the
other file has been moved, deleted, or renamed, you will get the following
error message:
Cannot update object.
Windows may be low on memory or disk space, or an object may not
be correctly registered.
CAUSE
When you open a publication, Publisher tries to update all linked objects.
If an update fails for any reason, you get the error message. Publisher
indicates that the update failed but does not indicate why it failed.
RESOLUTION
If you receive the above error message, try double-clicking each linked
object in your publication. If the linked file is present, the file will
open. If a linked file is missing, you will see the following descriptive
error message:
File link error.
This publication contains information that is linked to another file,
but Publisher cannot find that file. You may have deleted or moved
the file or the program you created it in. For information on linked
files, press F1 now.
In Publisher, click Links on the Edit menu. Click Change Source to
select another object of the same type to replace the linked object.
STATUS
Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in
