This article was previously published under Q136863 SYMPTOMS
When you link to an Rich Text Format (RTF) document using The Microsoft
Network (MSN), the document opens in Word.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs when Word is installed after MSN. Setup installs and
registers the RTF converter. As a result, RTF files are associated with
Word. (This association allows you to double-click a document icon or
object and automatically open the associated application to display the
document.)
RESOLUTION
To automatically open RTF documents in an application other than Word, such
as WordPad, use Windows Explorer to associate RTF documents with WordPad.
For more information about how to perform this task in Windows, see your
Windows printed documentation or online Help.
