SYMPTOMS

If you select a fancy first letter, you can change the letter's font and color from the Format toolbar, but you cannot change its size. You can change the number in the Point Size box, but the fancy first letter size won't change.

CAUSE

The size of a fancy first letter is determined by the size of the text in the paragraph, the line spacing, and the number of lines of text the fancy first letter should be even with. The latter setting cannot be changed on the Format toolbar and must be changed in the Custom Options dialog box.

RESOLUTION

To change the size of the fancy first letter, do the following:
  1. Click anywhere in the paragraph that contains the fancy first letter, and click Fancy First Letter on the Format menu.
  2. Click Custom Options.
  3. In the Size list under Choose Font And Size, select the number of lines of paragraph text you want the fancy first letter to be even with, and then click OK.
NOTE: The first time you try to change the size of a fancy first letter from the toolbar, Publisher displays the following message:

If you are trying to change the size of this fancy first letter, click the Format menu, click Fancy First Letter, and then click Custom Options. For step-by-step instructions, press F1 now.
