OFF95: Reinstall from Network or CD Removes Application Icons (136089)

SYMPTOMS

When you have a run from network or run from CD installation of Microsoft Office and you run a reinstallation, the Word and PowerPoint icons may be removed from your computer.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you have a Run From Network installation of Microsoft Office from a network administrative copy, or a Run From CD installation, and you then click the Reinstall button in Maintenance mode. Extra files are copied to the hard disk, but several items are removed, most notably the Word and PowerPoint icons and registry entries.

WORKAROUND

This problem does not occur if you perform a post-administrative local installation of Microsoft Office.

To avoid this problem, uninstall and reinstall the workstation installation from the server.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
