SUMMARY

Microsoft Money contains two new features for managing categories.

Money now allows you to add the Money Standard Categories to an existing file. Money also scans for unused categories and is able to remove unused categories from your category list.

To add or remove categories from your categories list, use either of the following methods.

Method 1

Use the appropriate method for your version of Money.

Money 98 and Later

  1. Start Money.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. Click the Categories tab.
  4. To add Standard Categories to your category list, click Restore Standard Categories.
  5. To remove unused categories from your category list, click Remove Unused Categories.
Note You are prompted before each category is removed.

Money 97

  1. Start Money.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. Click the Categories tab.
  4. To add Standard Categories to your category list, click Add.
  5. To remove unused categories from your category list, click Remove.
Note You must select Ask Me Before Removing Each Category if you want to be prompted before each category is removed.

Method 2

Use the appropriate method for your version of Money.

Money 2001 and Later

  1. Start Money.
  2. On the navigation bar, click Accounts & Bills, and then click Categories & Payees.
  3. In the left pane, click Categories.
  4. To add a new category, click New, and then follow the instructions on the screen.

    Note If you want to create a subcategory, click the category that you want, and then click Add a subcategory to category.

    To delete an existing category, select the category from the list, and then click Delete. Note that the categories that are listed under the Special section cannot be deleted.
  5. Click Next, and then complete the wizard.

Money 2000

  1. Start Money.
  2. On the navigation bar, click More, and then click Categories & Payees.
  3. In the left pane, click Categories.
  4. To add a new category, click New, and then follow the instructions on the screen.

    Note If you want to create a subcategory, click the category that you want, and then click Add a subcategory to category.

    To delete an existing category, select the category from the list, and then click Delete. Note that the categories that are listed under the Special section cannot be deleted.
  5. Click Next, and then complete the wizard.

Money 98 and Money 99

  1. Start Money.
  2. On the navigation bar, click Categories.
  3. In the left pane, click Categories.
  4. To add a new category, click New, and then follow the instructions on the screen.

    Note If you want this category to be a subcategory of the currently selected category, click Add a subcategory to category.

    To delete an existing category, select the category from the list and then click Delete. Note that the categories that are listed under the Special section are not available for you to delete; these categories cannot be deleted.
  5. Click Next, and then complete the wizard.

Money 97

  1. Start Money.
  2. On the Go To menu, click Payees and Categories.
  3. In the Payees and Categories dialog box, click Categories.
  4. To add a new category, click New and type the new category name.

    Note If you want this category to be a subcategory of the currently selected category, click the subcategory button.

    To delete an existing category, select the category from the list, and then click Delete. Note that the categories that are listed under the Special section are not available for you to delete; these categories cannot be deleted.
  5. Click Next, and then complete the wizard.
