Works 95: DB Returns to "No Database" with dBASE III, IV File (134416)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Works 4.5
  • Microsoft Works for Windows 95, version 4.0
  • Microsoft Works for Windows 95, version 4.0 4.0a

SYMPTOMS

When you try to print merge with a dBASE III or IV file, after you select the dBASE file in the Database tab of any of the print merge dialog boxes, the database selection returns to "No Database" or to the last non-dBASE database selected.

This only occurs if the dBASE file is closed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem occurs because the call made to load the dBASE file returns a flag indicating that the file cannot be opened. This flag is only used in print merge.

NOTE: The same problem existed in Works for Windows version 3.0. However, in that version, the Add Fields box would be blank, so there was no way to successfully merge the dBASE file without first converting it to the Works database format.

Use one of the following three methods to select the dBASE file for a print merge.

Method 1

Open the dBASE file before opening the Print Merge Wizard.

Method 2

  1. Select the dBASE file in the Database tab.
  2. Click View Database.
  3. When the database opens, click Go Back to return to the Wizard.

Method 3

Open the dBASE file and save it in a Works 4.0 format before you attempt the print merge.
