OFF95: CTRL+Clicking Button on Office Shortcut Bar Hangs Office (134276)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Office for Windows 95
This article was previously published under Q134276 SYMPTOMS
When you hold down the CTRL key, and click a button on the Office Shortcut
Bar, you may receive an Illegal Operation error message. If you click
Details, a message similar to the following appears:
MSOFFICE caused an invalid page fault in module MSOFFICE.EXE at
0137:5000170c.
Specifically, this problem may occur when you hold down the CTRL key and
click the Office Compatible button on the Office toolbar.
CAUSE
This problem occurs if you hold down the CTRL key and click a button on the
Office Shortcut Bar that is created for a network share or a folder on a
network share, if the path to the target folder uses the Universal Naming
Convention (UNC). For example, if a button on the Office Shortcut Bar has
the following shortcut target
\\computer\share
-or-
\\computer\share\user
you receive the Illegal Operation error message when you hold down CTRL and
click this button on the Office Shortcut Bar.
This problem occurs when you hold down the CTRL key and click the Office
Compatible button on the Office toolbar after performing a Run From Network
Server installation of Microsoft Office, because the target for this
shortcut is incomplete, and points only to the network server where
Microsoft Office was installed.
You do not need to hold down the CTRL key when you click a button on the
Office Shortcut Bar. Although you can hold this key in Windows when you
double-click a folder in My Computer to prevent a new window from opening
for the selected folder (the folder appears in the active window instead),
this key does not change the functionality of opening a file or folder from
the Shortcut Bar. When you click a button for a folder on the Office
Shortcut Bar, the folder opens in a new window.
Note that this problem does not occur when you hold down CTRL and click a
button for a second folder deep on the network drive. For example, this
problem does not occur if you hold down the CTRL key and click a button on
the Office Shortcut Bar with the following shortcut target:
\\computer\share\user\files
Additionally, this problem does not occur if the shortcut target uses a
persistent connection to the network, such as F:\user.
RESOLUTION
To avoid receiving an Illegal Operation error message when you click a
button on the Office Shortcut Bar, do not hold down the CTRL key when you
click a button.
