SUMMARY

This article describes the purpose and results if you choose or enable the Global-List option in the Administrator's program (ADMIN.EXE).

MORE INFORMATION

The option to enable the Global-List is described on pages 73-74 of version 3.2 and 3.5 of Microsoft Mail for PC Network "Administrator's Guide." This guide states:

If you do not enable the Global Address List, users need to select external addresses from network and gateway lists unless you add the external addresses to the Postoffice Address List (POL).

Likewise, the ADMIN.EXE program itself provides on-line help that describes this option:

Global-List allows you to configure whether or not your postoffice is to use the global address list.

Both sources imply that unless the Global-List option is enabled, the postoffice mail users will not be able to use the Global Address List (GAL) to address mail. This is true; however, the administrator should be aware of the following issues:
  • Even though the Global-List option is set to NO, the postoffice may still participate in Directory Synchronization (Dir-Sync). If this postoffice is set up as a Dir-Sync requester and is included in the DISPATCH.EXE process, the postoffice will participate in Dir-Sync, and the GAL will be built.
  • Whenever REBUILD.EXE is run against any postoffice, the Global-List option is automatically set to YES. This means an administrator must log into a postoffice after REBUILD.EXE runs against it and change the value back to NO if they do not want the users to be able to select addresses from the GAL.
  • Neither Microsoft Mail for Windows nor Microsoft Mail for PC Networks, MS-DOS workstation users will be able to select addresses from the GAL if this option is set to NO in the ADMIN.EXE.

The MS-DOS client users will not even see that a GAL is available, and the Windows client users will see an empty GAL. In both cases, the proper GAL files may be available on the postoffice. This option simply disables the clients from being able to use the GAL.
