SYMPTOMS

If you install Microsoft Office 97 for Windows on a computer that contains an earlier version of Microsoft Office, when you click a button on the Microsoft Office Manager (MOM) toolbar for an application installed by the earlier version of Office, the newer version of the Office application starts.

For example, if you click the Microsoft Excel button, Microsoft Excel 97 starts instead of Microsoft Excel version 7.0.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design of MOM because a button for a "registered" application, or an application that appears on the MOM toolbar by default, always starts the newest version of an application. To locate a registered application, MOM uses the information in the Windows registry file (in Windows 95) and starts the newest or current version of the application.

WORKAROUND

Note that the recommended method for upgrading to Microsoft Office 97 for Windows is to run the Setup program for an earlier version of Microsoft Office in maintenance mode, and click the Remove All button. However, if you want to run an earlier version of a registered application in Microsoft Windows, use any of the following methods.

Method 1: Run the application from the Windows Start menu

On the taskbar, click Start, and then click Programs. To start an Office application from a previous version of Microsoft Office, click Microsoft Office and then click the application that you want to start.

Method 2: Add the application to the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar

For additional information about adding a button to the Office Shortcut Bar, see the "Add a Toolbar Button for a File or Folder to the Office Shortcut Bar" topic in the Microsoft Office 97 for Windows Help file.

Method 3: Add the application to the MOM toolbar
