The information in this article applies to:

- Microsoft Windows 98
This article was previously published under Q132852 If this article does not describe your hardware-related issue, please see the following Microsoft Web site to view more articles about hardware: SYMPTOMS
When your computer restarts after you install Windows, you may receive a
BIOS level error message reporting an error on the main board.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur on Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI)
computers with bus mastering PCI network cards, and occurs only when the
real mode network has been started. The computer is unable to de-
initialize the network adapter when it is initialized from real mode.
RESOLUTION
To work around this issue, turn off the computer for about 10 seconds, and
then turn the computer back on.
To resolve this issue, contact the BIOS vendor to inquire about a possible
update to address this issue.
NOTE: This problem does not occur only during Windows Setup. This problem
occurs when the real mode network is started after the computer is
restarted, but not turned off (even with non-Plug and Play operating
systems). This problem does not occur when you use Windows 95/98 protected
mode network because the protected mode network drivers disable bus
mastering during shutdown.
