User Profiles Do Not Work with Default Home Directory (132818)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 98
  • Microsoft Windows 95

This article was previously published under Q132818

SYMPTOMS

When a user logs on to a Windows workstation that has user profiles enabled on a Windows NT network, the user may get the previous user's settings.

CAUSE

If the Windows NT domain has not been configured correctly for user profiles, the home directory for all user accounts may be the Windows NT default directory C:\Users\Default.

When the home directory is set to a local default directory such as C:\Users\Default, Windows assumes that all users on the workstation want to share settings.

RESOLUTION

Run the Windows NT User Manager tool on the Windows NT domain controller. View the properties of each user, view the Profile dialog box, and make sure that under Home Directory, the Connect option is selected and the To box contains a valid network path (for example, "\\<logon server>\ Home\<username>"). Ignore the Drive Letter box.

MORE INFORMATION

Note that the Profile Directory field in the Profile dialog box is for Windows NT use only. Windows uses only the Home Directory field information.
