WD6X: "Not Enough Memory" When Starting Find File (131708)

SYMPTOMS

When you choose Find File from the File menu in Word, you may receive the following error message:
Not enough memory

CAUSE

The error message is false; allocating more memory to Word does not solve the problem. The error indicates the presence of a corrupted or invalid Preferences file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Quit Word.
  2. Remove the Find File Preferences file from the System:Preferences folder.
  3. Remove the Microsoft Find File Settings file and any Search Results files from the System:Preferences:Microsoft Find File folder.
  4. Restart Word.
The Find File command should now work correctly.

NOTE: A corrupted Find File Settings file may be caused by an extension conflict. After you remove the Preferences files, use Find File several times with Extensions on to verify that it continues to work correctly.
