ACC2: Output to RTF Not Processed When Report Has a Blank Label (131020)

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Output To command to output a report containing a blank label to a Rich Text Format (RTF) file, the RTF file is not created. Microsoft Access does not alert you that the command was not processed.

CAUSE

The report contains a label whose Caption property is blank.

RESOLUTION

To work around the problem, either delete the report's blank label or add a value (a space or any other character or characters) to the label's Caption property setting.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Access version 2.0. This problem no longer occurs in Microsoft Access version 7.0.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Open the sample database NWIND.MDB.
  2. Create a blank report based on the Employees table and save it as Report1.
  3. If the field list is not displayed, choose Field List from the View menu, and then drag the Last Name field from the Field List box to the report's detail section.
  4. If it is not displayed, open the Last Name label's property sheet and delete the value set for the Caption property.
  5. From the File menu, choose Print Preview. Note that the Last Name label is blank.
  6. From the File menu, choose Output To.
  7. In the Select Format box, select Rich Text Format (*.rtf), and then choose the OK button.
  8. In the File Name box, type blanklbl.rtf, and then choose OK.
  9. Switch to File Manager and search for the BLANKLBL.RTF file. Note that the file is not listed.
