- Microsoft Excel for Windows 95
- Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows 95
- Microsoft Word for Windows 95
- Microsoft Project for Windows 95 4.1
This article was previously published under Q131018 SYMPTOMS
If you open one the Microsoft applications listed above (such as Microsoft
Word) by using the Open dialog box in the application or by clicking the
Open A Document button on the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar, when you click
one of the files in the list, the file icon disappears, and the filename
moves to the left in the Name column.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs if you use the Details, Properties, or Preview button
to view the files, and you select the Search Subfolders check box in the
Advanced Find dialog box.
This behavior is by design. When you select the Search Subfolders check
box, if you are using any of the views other than the List view, the list
of files in the Open dialog box appears in a "tree" structure, that is,
folders and subfolders appear in the list of files. Because the list of
files in the Open dialog box contains so much information about the file
when you search subfolders and you view the file details, properties, or a
preview, moving the filename to the left allows you to continue to view
this file information when you click a file to rename it.
RESOLUTION
To work around this behavior, you can use any of the following methods.
Method 1: Click the List button in the Open dialog box to change the view
of the files in the list.
Method 2: Clear the Search Subfolders check box in the Advanced Find dialog
box.
