SYMPTOMS

Bullets or paragraph numbering appears underlined on screen and when printed.

CAUSE

The paragraph mark at the end of the paragraph is formatted as underlined.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Remove Font Formatting from the Paragraph Mark

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the View tab.
  2. Under Nonprinting Characters, click to select the All check box.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Select the now-visible paragraph mark at the end of the paragraph with the underlined bullet or number.
  5. On the Format menu, click Font, and then click the Font tab.
  6. Remove any unwanted formatting, such as underline.
  7. Click OK.

Method 2: Use the Replace Feature

  1. On the Edit menu, click Replace.
  2. Click in the Find What box.
  3. Click Special and then click Paragraph Mark.

A "^p" (without the quotation marks) appears in the Find What box.
  4. Click Format and then click Font.
  5. In the Underline list, click Single.

"Format: Underline" (without the quotation marks) appears in the Find What area.
  6. Click in the Replace With box.
  7. Click Special and then click Paragraph Mark.

A "^p" (without the quotation marks) appears in the Find What box.
  8. Click Format and then click Font.
  9. In the Underline list, click None.

"Format: No Underline" (without the quotation marks) appears in the Find What area.
  10. Click Replace All.
  11. Click OK.

Method 3: Use Direct Formatting to apply Underline

If you need to Underline all of your text in the paragraph, do the following:

  1. Click the Numbering icon on the Format toolbar to number the paragraph.
  2. Press CTRL+U to turn on the Underline feature.
  3. Type your text.
When you press ENTER the next line is numbered and the number is not underlined.

MORE INFORMATION

Bullets and numbering are a paragraph format. The bullet character or number reflects the font formatting applied to the paragraph mark. Similarly, if the paragraph mark is formatted as a certain color or with any other font format, the bullet or number displays the same formatting.

Note that font formatting is not visible in the paragraph mark itself. For instance, an underlined paragraph mark does not appear underlined on screen or in the printed document.
