Incorrect Results in Retirement Planner Wizard (128598)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Money for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Money 97
  • Microsoft Money 3.0

This article was previously published under Q128598

SYMPTOMS

In the Retirement Planner Wizard in Money, when you enter unrealistic numbers (that is, numbers that are extremely large or small) in response to a given Wizard question, incorrect results may occur.

CAUSE

This problem is due to rounding errors.

For example, if you enter monthly contributions of less than 1 cent, the Retirement Planner Report rounds the amount to two decimal places and displays monthly contribution amounts of $0.00. However, Money keeps track of the actual contribution, and after several years, the total amount saved will begin to add up. Depending upon the variables entered, the Retirement Planner may display a Total Nest Egg of a sizable amount although the Total Contributions shows an amount of 0 (zero).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Money versions 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
