Problems Editing or Closing OLE Objects in Works (127102)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Works 3.0
- Microsoft Works 3.0a
- Microsoft Works 3.0b
This article was previously published under Q127102 SYMPTOMS
After you insert an OLE 1.0 object (such as Equation Editor, Microsoft
Draw, or Object Packager) into Microsoft Works, you are not able to exit
the object completely. Clicking your mouse in the document does not close
the object; it remains hatched (shaded with diagonal lines)and Works treats
it as an open object. In addition, the object's size is incorrect.
CAUSE
This behavior is caused by a difference in OLE 1.0 and OLE 2.0
functionality. The problem occurs when inserting an object from an OLE 1.0
source (for example, Equation Editor), into an OLE 2.0 destination, in this
case, Works 3.0.
RESOLUTION
NOTE: The steps to resolve the problem with Object Packager are
different than with other OLE 1.0 applications. For more information
about resolving this problem with files embedded using Object
Packager, query on the following:
111774 Works: Embedded Files Shown as Icons Are Always Hatched
Resolving OLE Problems with Applications Other than Object Packager- Double-click the object to activate it. The object's application opens.
- From the File menu of the OLE application, choose Exit and Return.
- Click your mouse pointer away from the object, but in the document.
The object is now updated, it remains the correct size, and the edit
mode has been completely exited.
MORE INFORMATION
OLE 2.0 provides in-place (insitu) editing functionality. In-place editing
allows you to edit an embedded object from within the destination
application, without having to exit or open a separate window. For in-place
editing to work, the object must come from an OLE 2.0 source, and be
inserted into an OLE 2.0 destination. OLE 1.0 cannot be involved.
