SUMMARY

You cannot insert smart (curly) quotes automatically in Works 3.0 as you can in Word 6.0 or Works 4.0, 4.0a, 4.5, or 4.5a. To produce smart quotes in Works, you must use the extended character codes corresponding to the smart quotes.

The character codes for the four types of smart quotes are:

Opening (Left) Single ALT+0145 Closing (Right) Single ALT+0146 Opening (Left) Double ALT+0147 Closing (Right) Double ALT+0148

NOTE: To enter the character codes, use the numeric keypad. Turn NUM LOCK off, and hold down the ALT key while you type the number. These codes may not work with all fonts (for example, Symbol and Wingdings).

MORE INFORMATION

To replace existing quotation marks ("straight" quotes) with smart quotes in Works 3.0 or 2.0, follow these steps:

  1. Select the text to change (or place the insertion point at the beginning of the document to change the entire document).
  2. In Works 3.0, click Replace from the Edit menu. In Works 2.0, click Replace from the Select menu.
  3. Enter the following depending upon the type of straight quote you want to replace:
       Type Find What Replace With
       ---- --------- ------------
       Opening single quote:
          Beginning of paragraph ^p' ^p<ALT+0145>
          Middle of paragraph <space>' <space><ALT+0145>
       Closing single quote ' <ALT+0146>
       Opening double quote:
          Beginning of paragraph ^p" ^p<ALT+0147>
          Middle of paragraph <space>" <space><ALT+0147>
       Closing double quote " <ALT+0148>

NOTE: Different documents have variable punctuation following the closing quotation mark. For example, sometimes there will be a space after the closing quotation mark, sometimes a carriage return, or sometimes a period, comma, or other punctuation. Therefore, you should replace the opening straight quotes first, then replace the remaining straight quotes with the code for closing smart quotes.
  4. Click Replace All to change all occurrences, or click Find Next in version 3.0 (or Replace in version 2.0) and then click Replace to step through one occurrence at a time.
To change possessive or contraction single straight quotes, selectively change the single straight quotes to closing single smart quotes (ALT+0146) or first change all opening single straight quotes as above, and then change the remaining single straight quotes to ALT+0146.

NOTE: Works 4.0, 4.5, or 4.5a has the capability to automatically insert smart quotes. This option can be turned off. To turn off the smart quotes, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the Editing tab.
  3. Click Use Smart Quotes.
