This article was previously published under Q124251 SYMPTOMS
When you open a WordPerfect file in Works for Windows, custom tabs set in
the original document do not function properly. When you press the TAB key,
the cursor jumps to the rightmost custom tab, bypassing any preceding tabs.
CAUSE
During the conversion process, the tab locations are sorted numerically
from largest to smallest, that is, from the rightmost tab to the leftmost
tab. Works for Windows reads the tab table from the first tab on the list
to the last. Because the tabs are sorted largest to smallest, the first tab
recognized will be the rightmost tab. The next tab value to be read from
the table is less than that of the first tab location and is ignored.
RESOLUTION- After opening the file in Works for Windows, select the text
containing the tab characters and re-insert each custom tab location
in the Tabs dialog box (from the Format menu, click
Tabs). You do not have to delete the existing tabs before
re-inserting the custom tab locations.
- In WordPerfect, save the file in rich text format (*.RTF). (Saving
the file in RTF from Works for Windows itself or from Word for
Windows will not correct the tab problems).
For information on whether RTF is an export option for your version of
WordPerfect and for information about how to save files in the RTF format,
see your WordPerfect documentation.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. MORE INFORMATION
When you open a WordPerfect 5.0 for MS-DOS, 5.1 for MS-DOS, 5.x for Windows, or WordPerfect 5.1 and 5.2 Secondary file format in Works for
Windows, your tab-formatted text is aligned only with the rightmost custom tab. Note, however, that all of the custom tabs appear on the ruler and are included in the list of tabs in the Tabs dialog box.
When you open a WordPerfect 5.0 file in Works for Windows, an additional tab is created at the right margin of the document. This tab becomes the only active tab for the document.
