The following information describes the operating system related
support guidelines for direct phone support of Microsoft Office and
the Microsoft Office applications by non-operating system support
Support professionals.
MORE INFORMATION
In the following information, "we" is used to refer to all Microsoft
PSS Support professionals who support Microsoft Office for Windows and the
Microsoft Office applications (Microsoft Excel for Windows, Microsoft
Word for Windows, Microsoft Access, and Microsoft PowerPoint for
Windows).
The operating system related support guidelines for the Microsoft
Office applications are as follows:
Printing
We support printing from the Microsoft Office application if the
printer and environment being used is supported by Microsoft Windows
and if the video driver being used is the standard VGA driver
included with Microsoft Windows. If the printing problem is only
evident in the Microsoft Office application and not in Microsoft
Write or Microsoft Paintbrush, the call is supported.
Support for third-party printer drivers is provided by the
third-party manufacturer.
Fonts
We support Microsoft fonts that are shipped with the following
applications:
- Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Windows for Workgroups
- Microsoft Office for Windows
- Any Microsoft Office for Windows application
- Microsoft TrueType Font Pack I and II
- Microsoft Office Assistant
- Microsoft Word Assistant
We support the use of the fonts if the problem cannot be reproduced
in Microsoft Write, but can be reproduced in the Microsoft Office
application being used.
Support for third-party printer fonts is provided by the third-party
manufacturer.
Screen (Display)
We support the standard VGA video drivers that ship with Microsoft
Windows 3.x.
- The [boot] section of the SYSTEM.INI file should contain the following
line:
display.drv=vga.drv - The above line should appear only once in the SYSTEM.INI file: duplicate
entries should be commented out with a semicolon (;) or removed entirely
from the SYSTEM.INI file.
We will reinstall the standard VGA video driver (recommended) or any
other display driver included with the Microsoft Windows 3.x package.
Support for third-party video drivers is provided by the third-party
manufacturer.
Environment
We support basic optimization (covered in application-specific
Application Notes or Knowledge Base articles).
We support the modification of the REG.DAT file as it applies to
Microsoft Office applications.
We support the creation of program icons to perform
application-specific functions, such as opening a data file when
starting the application.
We support ensuring that the environment settings necessary for the
proper operation of the application are correct, such as TEMP
settings, virtual memory settings, and command line switches specific
to the Microsoft Office application.
