SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you format the Gantt bar so that text in your project is placed to the left or right of a bar, the bar text will not be printed if the start or end of the bar fits exactly on the page.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow the appropriate procedure below.

IF RIGHT TEXT IS TRUNCATED

If the right-most text is truncated, follow the appropriate procedure for the type of printer you have.

Method 1: PostScript Printer or Microsoft Project 98

If you have a PostScript printer and Microsoft Project versions 4.0, or if you are using Microsoft Project 98, do the following:

  1. On the File menu, click Page Setup, and then click the View tab.
  2. Click to clear the Fit Timescale To Page check box.
  3. Click the Page tab.
  4. Under Scaling, click Adjust To. In the % Normal Size box, type in a new value or click the arrows to make the following changes:
    • Decrease percentage value so that all the text will fit on the page.

      -or-

    • Increase the percentage value to force the bar and text to a second page.

  5. Click OK.

Method 2: Non-PostScript Printer

If you do not have a PostScript printer or if the above method does not work, use the following steps:

Change the Timescale Enlargement:

  1. On the File menu, click Page Setup, and then click the View tab.
  2. Click to clear the Fit Timescale To Page check box.
  3. Click OK.
  4. On the Format menu, click Timescale.
  5. In the Enlarge box, type in a new value or click the arrows to make one of the following changes:
    • If only a few characters are truncated, decrease the value in the Enlarge percentage box until the right-most text is fully visible in print preview.

      -or-

    • If more than a few characters are truncated, increase the value in the Enlarge percentage box until the text is forced to a second page.

  6. Click OK.
Change the Size of the Font for the Major and Minor Timescale Units:

  1. On the Format menu, click Text Styles.
  2. In the Item To Change box, click Major Timescale.
  3. In the Size box, select a smaller size.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 to change the font size for the Minor Timescale.
  5. Click OK.
Reduce the Size of the Printed Table:

To reduce the size of the printed table, try any of the following:

  • Remove unnecessary white space in the table columns by double-clicking the column header, and selecting the Best Fit option.

    -or-

  • Print fewer columns in the table by dragging the vertical line that divides the Gantt timescale from the table over fields you do not want to print.

IF LEFT-MOST TEXT IS TRUNCATED

On the File menu, click Print. Under Timescale, click Dates. In the From box, type in an earlier start date or click the down arrow and select an earlier start date that will accommodate the left-most text.
