The Works for Windows Startup dialog box, Font Name and Font Size list
boxes in the toolbar, and dialog boxes such as Page Setup may be truncated
and/or contain corrupted text and buttons if the MS Sans Serif font is
missing or corrupt.
RESOLUTION
To correct the problem, remove the MS Sans Serif font if it is already
installed and then reinstall it from the Windows Fonts Control Panel using
the following steps:
Windows 3.x- In Windows Control Panel (usually in the Main group of Program
Manager), select the Fonts icon.
- If MS Sans Serif is not displayed in the list of Installed Fonts,
proceed to step 5 to reinstall it. If MS Sans Serif is in the list of
Installed Fonts, it may be corrupted and must be removed (see steps
3-4 below).
- Select MS Sans Serif and choose the Remove button.
- Select the Delete Font File From Disk box and choose the Yes button.
MS Sans Serif is now removed. Continue with the following steps to
reinstall the font.
NOTE: If the Copy Fonts to Windows Directory box was selected
in the Add Fonts dialog box (see steps 5-6) when installing
fonts, step 4 will not permanently remove the font from the hard
drive. It will only remove the font from the Windows SYSTEM directory.
To check if the font files were permanently removed, search the hard
drive for sserif*.fon.
- From the Fonts dialog box, choose the Add button.
- Change the directory to the Windows SYSTEM subdirectory and select
the OK button.
- From the list of fonts, select MS Sans Serif and choose the OK
button.
NOTE: If the MS Sans Serif font is not listed, you will need to
change to the drive and directory containing the original Windows
disk with the MS Sans Serif font file, SSERIFE.FO_ for VGA resolution
or SSERIFF.FO_ for 8514 resolution:
Windows Version Disk Format Disk Number
-----------------------------------------------------
Windows 3.1 720K Disk 10 (A)
Windows 3.1 1.2 MB Disk 5
Windows 3.1 1.44 MB Disk 5
Windows 3.11 1.2 MB Disk 6
Windows 3.11 1.44 MB Disk 5
Windows for Workgroups 3.1 1.2 MB Disk 7
Windows for Workgroups 3.1 1.44 MB Disk 5
Windows for Workgroups 3.11 1.2 MB Disk 6
Windows for Workgroups 3.11 1.44 MB Disk 5 (8514) or 6 (VGA) - Close the Fonts Control Panel and restart Works.
The corruption should now be corrected.
Windows 95- Click the Start button, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
- Open the Fonts folder, and then on the View of the Fonts folder, click
Details.
- If MS Sans Serif is not displayed in the Fonts folder, proceed to step
5 to reinstall it. If MS Sans Serif is in the Fonts folder, it may be
corrupted and must be removed (see step 4).
- Select MS Sans Serif and then, on the File menu, click Delete.
MS Sans Serif is now removed. Continue with the following steps to
reinstall the font.
- On the File menu, click Install New Font.
- In the Add Fonts dialog box, change the folder to the Windows fonts
folder, and then click the OK button.
- From the list of fonts, select MS Sans Serif, and then click OK. If MS
Sans Serif is listed twice (VGA and 8514) select the appropriate version
for the output device you are using. If you are unsure, about the type
of output device you are using, select both versions of MS Sans Serif.
NOTE: If the MS Sans Serif font is not listed, you need to extract the
MS Sans Serif font files from the Windows 95 diskette or CD-ROM and
place the files in the Windows\fonts folder and repeat Steps 5-7.
The MS Sans Serif font files are located in the Win95_06.cab file on
disk 6 of the Windows 95 DMF disk set, or in the Win95_05.cab file in
the Win95 folder on the Windows 95 CD-ROM. The files are Sserife.fon for
VGA resolution or Sseriff.fon for 8514 resolution.
To extract these files, use the following syntax with the Extract
utility at the command prompt:
extract /L <destination> <source> <filename>
Where <destination> is the folder where you want the font file
placed, <source> is the cabinet file that contains the font file, and
<filename> is the name of the font file.
For example, if you are using the Windows 95 DMF disk set and your
floppy drive is drive A:, you would type the following at the command
prompt:
extract /L C:\windows\fonts win95_06.cab sseriff.fon - After you install the font, close the Control Panel and restart Works.
