  • Microsoft PowerPoint for Macintosh 4.0

This article was previously published under Q120947

SYMPTOMS

When you insert an object into a document and select the Display As Icon option in the Insert Object dialog box, the icon may display as a document (that is, as a page with the corner folded over).

RESOLUTION

It may be necessary to rebuild the desktop file of the Macintosh to refresh the association of document icons with their applications. To rebuild the desktop file, follow these steps:
  1. Exit all applications that are currently running.
  2. On the Special menu, click Restart. Hold down the COMMAND and OPTION keys at the same time while the computer starts and until the following message appears:
Are you sure you want to rebuild the desktop...
  3. If you click OK, any comments that you have placed in the Get Info windows of your files, applications, and folders will be lost. These windows hold comments only if you explicitly place comments in them. If you want to continue with the rebuild, click OK.
Alternatively, the icon used by an inserted object can be changed by following these steps:
  1. On the Application menu, click the Finder. Locate a file, folder, or application that uses the icon you would like to use in PowerPoint, and click it one time to select it.
  2. On the File menu, click Get Info.
  3. Click the icon displayed in the upper-left corner.
  4. On the Edit menu, click copy. Close the Get Info dialog box.
  5. On the Application menu, click PowerPoint.
  6. Click one time on the object icon that is displaying incorrectly.
  7. On the Edit menu, click the last command, which will read Edit <object type>, where <object type> depends on which object is selected. Click Convert.
  8. Click the icon present in the lower-right corner of the dialog box.
  9. On the Edit menu, click Paste. Click OK.

MORE INFORMATION

The Apple desktop file maintains information regarding file icon and application associations. Microsoft PowerPoint and the application associated with the inserted object have no control over which icon is displayed in the presentation. The icon displayed is passed to PowerPoint as a Graph document icon from the Desktop file. It is common for the desktop file to pass a generic document icon if it cannot locate the correct icon for an application. For more information about the desktop file and its components with System 7.x, see "Inside Macintosh," volume VI.
